Die Benediktinerabtei Sankt Mauritius
Hoch oben auf luftiger, bewaldeter Höhe erhebt sich die imposante, im neuromantischen Stil erbaute Benediktinerabtei Sankt Mauritius. Sie unterstreicht deutlich das vielfältige Grün der umliegenden Wälder durch das helle Rot ihres mächtigen Turmes und der Dächer. Die Abtei wurde erbaut in den Jahren 1909/1910. Die Gründer waren die Benediktiner der französischen Abtei St-Maur de Glanfeuil. Diese mußten wegen der damaligen religionsfeindlichen Politik der französischen Regierung fliehen und fanden nach verschiedenen Zwischenstationen in Belgien eine freundliche Aufnahme in Clerf, wo sie dann ansässig wurden. Die jetzt hier lebenden Benediktinermönche stammen aus verschiedenen Ländern. Sie bilden zusammen eine geistige Familie, an deren Spitze der Abt steht. Alle führen ein zurückgezogenes Leben im Geiste der Regel des heiligen Benedikt. Den Hauptakzent legen sie auf die Pflege des gemeinsamen Chorgebetes (7 mal täglich) und auf die Feier des Gottesdienstes. Sie betätigen sich entweder mit Handarbeit (Kaffeerösterei, Buchbinderei, Photolabor) oder mit Geistesarbeit auf verschiedenen Gebieten und mit Seelsorge (Aushilfe im Bistum, Betreuung der Gläubigen, geistige Exerzitien). Die Krypta beherbergt eine sehr interessante Photoausstellung über das Leben und Wirken der Benediktiner. Der Souvenirladen bietet eine hervorragende Auswahl an interessanten Büchern, Schallplatten, Kunstgegenständen jeglicher Art.
L'Abbaye Saint Maurice et Saint Maur
Tout là-haut, comme un splendide coeur de roses animant un immense bouquet de verdure; illuminant du rouge frais de ses tuiles une très riche ambiance forestière: L'Abbaye Bénédictine St. Maurice et St. Maur. C'est un joyau de style néoromantique, enchâssé dans un ensemble aux charmes quatre fois l'an variables, mais toujours adaptés. La construction de ce havre de paix remonte aux années 1909, 1910. Les moines fondateurs, victimes des lois antichrétiennes de la République Française au début de ce siècle, durent émigrer en 1901, de l'abbaye St. Maur de Glanfeuil (diocèse d'Angers) provisoirement en Belgique et, de là, à Clervaux, où ils trouvèrent, de la part du Gou-vernement Luxembourgeois et des citoyens, un bienveillant accueil. Les moines de St. Maurice, de nationalités diverses, forment une famille religieuse, sous l'autorité du Révérendissime Père Abbé. Ils mènent une vie de prière et de recueillement, selon l'esprit de la Règle de Saint Benoît; dans un partage harmonieux du temps entre la prière commune ou personnelle et le travail. 7 manifestations chorales à l'église sont prévues, rythmant de psalmodie la journée, dont la Grand-Messe solennelle, communautaire et publique est le centre. De cet esprit vivifiant s'imprègnent les activités des moines dans des perspectives multiples: Apostolat par l'administration des sacrements, dans le monastère ou au dehors. Retraites spirituelles. Charges éventuelles de remplacements dans la diocèse. Tâches intellectuelles et artistiques. Travaux Manuels, en vue des besoins du monastère et d'oeuvre de charité. Une exposition remarquable de photographies splendides et documentaires, dans la crypte sous l'église, concrétise le curriculum quotidien et le déroulement historique de l'abbaye. Un alléchant Magasin de Souvenirs fournit aux touristes les moyens de graver dans la mémoire le rappel d'une visite vraiment intéressante et instructive.
The Benedictine Abbey of St Maurice
The magnificent and impressive Neo-Romanesque structure of the Benedictine abbey of St Maurice is situated high above the town at the top of the woody and windy heights of Clervaux. The red tiles of the tower and roof of the abbey are beautifully contrasted with the green shades of the surrounding woods and can be admired as soon as the tourist enters the little town of Clervaux. The abbey was built in 1909/1910. Its founders were the Benedictine monks of the French abbey of St Maur of Glanfeuil in the diocese of Angers. In 1901 the monks hat been compelled to leave France due to the religiously antagonistic politics of the French Government of those days. After various temporary settlements in Belgium the monks finally settled in Clervaux, where they met with a hearty welcome both from the part of the population and from the Luxembourg Government. The Benedictine monks who live here at the moment come from various countries. Together they constitute a spiritual community and family under the authority of the abbot. All of them lead a very secluded and retired life according to the rules established by St Benedict. They divide their time between personal and communal prayer and work. The main emphasis lies on the communal chorus prayers, on psalm and hymn singing and on the celebration of the divine service. They also help with spiritual activities outside the monastery when needed for religious retreats, substitution in the diocese, pastoral care or dispensing of the sacraments. Some of the monks excel in intellectual and artistic activities. They also do manual work according to the needs of the monastery and charity institutions. Some of their activities are bookbinding, photo processing and coffee roasting. In the crypt of the abbey there is an exhibition showing an excellent collection of photos illustrating the Benedictines' daily lives and explaining the historical development of the abbey. The souvenir shop in the abbey offers an Interesting selection of valuable books, records and art objects of all sorts.
